Anyone have a child that has breath holding spells?

My 18 month old daughter has breath holding spells often! It scares us but the doctor said that it is not harmful to her. Just wondering if any one does anything in particular to try to have them stop or not so bad. She will hold her breath turn blue and purple and then pass out for a few seconds.

  • yes my niece use to hold her breath all the time if she wasnt getting her way, or if she hurt herself, after tons of testing the dr said she would grow out of it she did. we use to spray her with a water bottle to get her attention then she would be tired for a bit but nothing ever bad....good luck

  • She's found the rush to no air. A future drug user or alcoholic, possibly. panic now.

  • I have had numerous toddlers do that. Just blow into her face and it will force her to take a breath. She will out grow it. It will not make her a futrure drug user or alcoholic, It is normal for a child to do this as a means to get their way.

  • Oh for crying out loud.

While it is not common, it's not abnormal either. IT does not mean she is a future drug user either. How moronic to even consider that.

As long as she comes to once she passes out, she's fine. It's not something you want to just allow, sure...but until/unless you can talk and reason with her to not do it, there isn't much that can be done.

If she starts doing it purposefully when you're disciplining her, you definitely want to ignore the behavior. (make sure she's okay and comes to, obviously but don't draw attention to it when she does it)

As long as she comes to immediately and is immediately aware of her surroundings (not in a daze) she's fine.

Gotta love some of the moronic responses you get on here. "Not normal" and a future drug user. ROFLMAO

  • Breath holding happens, kids use it to get their way. If she's holding her breath out of anger, just make sure that when she passes out she won't hit her head, there is NOTHING wrong with her
