If breastfeeding is the #1 source of infant food, and formula is #4 (according to the World Health Org)....

Then what are #2 and #3? I've looked around WHO.org, and I haven't been able to find anything. Just curious as to what the answer is. I am not looking for a breastfeeding vs formula debate, so if that's what you want, then please take it somewhere else.

  • #1 is mother's milk direct from her breasts
    #2 is mother's milk from a bottle
#3 is milk from another mother, from either bottle or breast
    #4 is formula

I might have #2 & #3 mixed up, but it's something like that. I don't think it's bizarre. Skin to skin human contact is part of breastfeeding, and think about what women did before formula if they weren't able to nurse a baby for some reason (wet nurses). IMO, those things are better than getting formula. Formula is made to be ok for every baby, but it's not perfect for any baby. Even with all the advances in recent years with formula ingredients, still no formula is as complete as breastmilk.

  • LOL! I understand what you are getting at. Who has determined the order of the foods? Is it the fda or something? I'm curious. Lemme know if you find out 2 and 3!

  • Raybird is right. WHO and our government (fda, cdc), and the AAP agree with it.

#1 is mother's milk direct from her breasts
    #2 is mother's milk from a bottle
#3 is milk from another mother, from either bottle or breast
    #4 is formula
