What causes infant to get hiccups?

My son gets the hiccups nearly every time he eats!
What makes this happen, and how can I prevent it?

  • It's normal, there's nothing you can to to stop them - if he's going to get them, he's going to get them.

  • I don't know of anything to prevent them but my 6 week DD gets them so bad her whole little body spasms. We have found that gripe water works wonders. They stop immediately!
