What do Indians use to make the red dot on their foreheads?

My new neurologist is Indian. It looked like lipstick, it was smudged a bit. But I was afraid to ask him. I didn't want to sound rude, I am curious. Does anyone know?

  • Its some type of herb or pepper...

    I was curious about the culture too so I went to a Hindu temple and its like this powder that u put on your forehead at the 3rd eye or something. and you put a base down too like water to make it stick

  • It is made from a paste using whatever is locally available, often sandalwood or other redish herbs or minerals.
