Oatmeal instead of bread crumbs?

I'm making turkey meatloaf tonight & don't have bread crumbs, so I'm using oatmeal. Has anyone else ever done this? How did it come out? I'm hoping it comes out yummy, 'cause it seems healthier using oatmeal.

  • I always use oatmeal for meatloaf too. And if you sautee your onions in just like a teaspoon of oil, and sautee mushrooms in with the onions then mix them all up into the meatloaf with your seasonings, the mushrooms keep the meatloaf really moist. When you use oatmeal, I use 1/2 cup per pound of ground meat. So for 2 lbs you would use 1 cup oatmeal, and soak it in 1/2 cup milk for 5 minutes before adding that to the meat mixture.
