Fever Seizure-Febrile Seizure-Been to ER-Ear Infection-104.1-go again???

My friend has a 21 m/o son who had a seizure at 2am, foaming at mouth, eyes rolled back in head, convulsing. They took him to the ER where he was diagnosed with an ear infection, and they said he had a seizure from the fever. They gave them antibiotics that they started about 7 am, and tylenol/motrin switching every 3 hours (6 hours between tylenol & 6 hrs between motrin). gave meds at 7:30, 10:30, 1:30, and at he was asleep when the 4:30 dose was due. So when he woke at 5:00, his fever was 104.1. Would you take him back again? Or what? She also has a step-son that is DEAF from a temp of 105 from an ear infection. Doesn't want it to happen again AND IT'S THE SAME DR AS HER STEP-SON saying not to bring him in.

  • Can you imagine if the child goes into the emergency room with a seizure and she tells them he had a 104 fever and she didn't bring him in again? I would change doctors after this also, look what happened to her stepson! Her stepson is deaf from the same thing, and the same doctor! Nope go with your gut and take him in if the bath, and eating ice chips, popsickles, and plenty of water on top of all the fever reducing meds are not helping. It won't hurt to take him in, it could mean another seizure if she does not. Good Luck!

  • o goodness! i would most def. drop the doc and find one who is more understanding! for the fever, i would prolly give him some Tylenol or Motrin and see if the fever goes down in a half hour to hour tops, unless it keeps climbing during that time then i would take him in, if it goes down i would just watch him like a hawk to make sure it stays down. poor hunny i hope he feels better. But the best advice is trust her instincts and screw the doc. lol if she thinks he needs to go in take him in. i have a hard tyme giving advice because i dont want anything bad to happen to him! o goodness, good luck!

  • Thanks, that's kind of what I told her, and that's what she wants to hear. To NOT take him in goes against her better judgment.

  • Nope, I would just get the meds in him. It doesn't matter how high the temp goes in febrile siezures, it's how fast it goes up. A child could have a siezure with a temp of just 101 if it happened fast enough.
Febrile siezures are harmless although very scary.

  • Thanks, ladies, for all your answers. She was on her way home and said if her DH hadn't gotten the temp down, that she was taking him in. thanks again.
