If they get Medicare, why are they against a public option?

On Thursday, Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) called on 55 Republican adversaries of the public option to give up their government-funded health insurance. The congressman argued that it is hypocritical for Senate and House members receiving "government-administered single-payer health care -- Medicare" to oppose making such coverage available to the American public.

"Even in a town known for hypocrisy, this list of 55 Members of Congress deserve some sort of prize," Weiner wrote. "They apparently think the public option is ok for them, but not anyone else."

  • You do know that medicare and medicaid are going BROKE right? They WANT the babies and elderly to be covered but REALIZE that THIS way isnt working. However REAL reform would.

  • I wonder the same thing, Medicare is free minus the cost of private supplement insurance. Most proposals of the public option is suppose charge a premium like private insurance, but unlike private insurance it cover everything.

  • I am not sure I am understanding this question. You are saying that repubs wont give up THEIR govt health ins? right? And THEY are being called hypocrites......ummmmm...What about the fact that repubs tried to add an amendment to the HC bills that would make it mandatory for ALL in the house and senate to have the coverage that they pass...the public option that EVERYONE else would have. Every single Dem voted against that! THEY are the hypocrites. Repubs are using the HC that the dems are....right?

Stop trying to cloud the argument with stuff like facts. They hate when you do that.

  • Medicaid and Medicare does not cover everything.

If its hypocritical for the repubs then it should be the same for dems. They BOTH use the SAME health care!

  • Medicare is not free. It costs me over $90.00 a month. My supplemental is Tricare for Life and that isn't free either.
Where do you guys come up with this info?
Everybody should be able to have affordable Health Care --even if it does cost something. Some who have NO insurance are paying over a thousand a month. Is that fair? No way.
