Help with toddler constipation!

My son just turned 4 and he has been constipated. The last time he went was last friday, only from an enema, and then the friday before that he went. so pretty much 2 times in the past 2 weeks. Now hes been in and out of the ER, i've been calling the doctor almost every other day. He has 3 enemas last week in one day just for him to go. Hes on benefiber now for the past week, i've tried miralax but that made him sick. On top of everything else, hes a horribly picky eater. so he wont eat veggies or a lot of meat. I've cut down his milk and he drinks plenty of juice and water, He knows he has to go he just keeps saying it hurts and wont push. The doctor just keeps having us try more and more laxatives and tells us to wait. I really dont know what else to do

  • carrot juice is good. If it hurts when he pushes, you can go to the drug store and get liquid suppositories. They are liquid, and this lubricant squirts up there, not like a hard supository. It really in making it more comfortable to go. Also put milk and raisan bran in a bowl and microwave it til warm. Add extra sugar for him to get him to eat it. The warm bran cereal can help move things along. Lastly you are a mom but you can darn well be a sneak, and be creative about it! Blend up the softened prunes in a blender. Make an ice cream shake with chocolate icecream and chocolate chips and throw in the prunes! Be creative mom, you know what he likes for a smoothie, just pop some prune puree and he gets the benefits and you get your sanity back. this must be nerve wracking for you. Good Luck! Oh maybe a jar of prune baby food would save you some work, and be really easy to sneak in!

  • Apple juice has a good source of fiber. Get the slightly more expensive stuff that's fresh pressed and not from concentrate.

Mineral oil should help as well but check with your doctor first.

    Hopefully he gets better soon.
I sympathize greatly, my son was severely constipated last year as well and was in and out of the ER for it too. It did pass, but it's horrible to go through.

  • Sounds like he has something going on that is causing constipation. He may have an undiagnosed gluten sensitivity. Put him on a gluten free diet for a few weeks. Keep using the benefiber & push veggies & fruit.
