it takes him FOREVER to fall asleep..

the past few nights my 2 1/2yr old son has had some trouble falling asleep. i haven't done anything different in his schedule and don't give him any kind of sugar before bed so im not sure what the problem is. he takes 3hr naps every day and i thought that might be it but he's been taking long naps since he was a baby. should i shorten his naps? advice?

  • Yes, i would shorten his nap. Start waking him up an hour early and see if that helps.

  • No don't shorten his naps. He sleeps for as long as his body needs him to. Make sure that you are getting his nap in around 12 so he has plenty of time to burn more energy before dinner. Just ride it out and see how long it lasts, it may just be a little fluke that last a week. The best thing to do is have him run around the house for about 30 min. before bedtime/booktime and try laying him down a little later than usual. I'm sure it will pass in a week. He really does need his naps though so don't take that away or you'll end up with an overly tierd child who will fight you on going to sleep at night.

  • I have had 2 heavy nappers, do not take away his naps. It will only hurt his attitude (and giving that he is 2, it can't be great to begin with LOL). There are lots of reasons a child would stay up. Not tired enough, hungry, preoccupied with something else that is going on. Try giving him a cup of milk before bed (it has something in it to help make them sleepy plus it will fill his tummy a bit). Maybe you can extend his bedtime by 15 or even 30 minutes or let him have mommy time with you on the couch for a bit watching a movie or reading a book. Sometimes we just need to go with the flow. :)
