Is there such a thing as a race only name?

We have a baby name that we really like. But people keep telling me it's a "black" persons name!! I don't think there's such a thing as race only name! What's your opinion?

  • I don't think that there is a race only name but there are names that are perceived to sound "black" because those are the names that sound really strange. I have a coworker who is name "Byrion" but pronounced "Byron". They can get a little crazy with spellings and pronunciations.

  • My name is Natasha and everyone always thinks I'm black or Russian before meeting me or seeing me first. lol kinda funny, because I'm just so dang white!

Times are different now than they used to be and I really don't think a name has a race these days.

Besides, even if people do think your child is black (and they are not) I'm sure they will figure it out once they meet them and all of their prior thoughts about them having a black name will be gone.

  • People say my son's middle name is a black name all the time and i'm just like WTF??? His name is Isaiah btw... There are some names that seem to be used more by certain race but I wouldn't say it was a "black" name or an "indian" name or "white" or something like that.

  • names that have specific religious or cultural historical references maybe. Like Muhammad, Nefertiti, Solomon or Jesus. But even then..its just a name and has no ownership. People just love to point out things that have nothing to do with them. My son's name is Emmett..and yes people tell me its a "black" name? When really its an old fashioned Irish name. So don't sweat it..you will never win.

  • Ignore the people who tell you that. A name is a name.

  • i caught a lot of flack for my dd's name- Nikita -because my extended fam thought it sounded black.. OMG! its Russian! same thing happened when i had ds#1- Damon (its Greek)- i think my wonderful christian family may be a little on the bigoted side. lol

no, only names that are specific to a culture can be called as such (obviously if i named my children Swahili names, they would be "black" names KWIM?)... anyway, doesn't really matter. it all boils down to being uninformed (since saying ignorant is now perceived as calling some one stupid). they can all get over it, a name is a personal thing, and they don't have to "get it'.
