Where does it say that demons/Satan/evil is physically hideous?

Why is it when people draw, paint or even say then have seen evil, it's always ugly and grotesque? Where did this belief come from, and wouldn't it make more sense to have evil be beautiful, alluring and appealing over-all in order to temp you to desire it more?

  • The devil was originally named Lucifer and was an angel and the "bright and morning star." He was beautiful and powerful. He is never described as having horns or hoofs or a pitchfork or any of that other stuff people imagine in their minds. The Bible sort of describes Lucifer/Satan, it most certainly doesn't describe him like he is so often portrayed, with horns and cloven hooves. Did you ever think that later, medieval description of your bad guy was created simply to discredit the Horned God of the Pagans, Cernunnos/Herne/Pan, who has antlers or horns but who is NOT evil. As Margaret Murray wrote, "The God of the Old Religion always becomes the devil of the new.

  • What kind of sick world are you living in? Evil is depicted as ugly because it is. Satan is evil there for ugly. If you think he is beautiful then you have a right to that opinion but I also have the right to think that you are one sick woman.

  • I see were she's coming from.  Look at the harpies of mythology. They were beautiful had beautiful voices to entice men. They were considered evil. Beauty out ugly in. So yes Satan and demons could use beauty to entice to turn our heads. Makes perfect sense. As Matter of fact that is what we are to look for. For at one time wasn't Satan the most beautiful of all? He of all would know how to use beauty.

  • Actually, in the Bible, he says that Satan is the most beautiful man you'll ever see... how else would he trick people into following him? Let me ask my dad the exact part where it says that, he'll know.

  • Satan is a fallen Angel. Angels are said to be the most glorious beings around hence then Satan would be beautiful! Or is this another attempt at religions to brainwash us? Hmmmm.......

  • It is human nature to be repelled by ugliness and attracted to beauty so it makes sense that evil would be depicted as ugly (or anon).  big smile mini

  • Good question! And IA with your statement, that it makes MORE sense for him to be beautiful....all the more to entice people with. People will naturally avoid ugly, scary looking things. But when it's beautiful and cunning, and charming....different story!

  • Do you think people (or demons, fallen angels ect...) can be so evil and ugly on the inside that sooner or later, that ugliness will manifest outwards and they will be hideously deformed and unattractive- that their beauty will disolve?
