Looking to get a new dog but can't decide...

I was looking into getting a Dane, but I am not sure if I will trust them around the little ones.. I really would like a larger dog though, as I am not big on smaller dogs.. I have a small dog now.. and Don't want another one..

I have always wanted a Dane and so has my husband.. We were also looking in a lab or a golden retriever..

Any thoughts? And breeds that are big and known for being gentle giants or loyal? I know retrievers and maybe St. Benards?

Any help or ideas? It would be appreciated.

Our dog is Boxer/Rhodisean Ridgeback. He is a great dog. There are many great dogs in shelters that are needing homes. Check you local shelters.

  • labs and goldens are great dogs, after the puppy stage. they are horrific puppies, and can be quite clumsy knocking down very little kids when playing. i've always wanted a Great Dane also and have been around them, they seem to be gentle and affectionate, i've yet to see one aggressive. i say go for the great dane.

  • I'd say check out the dogs at your local shelter. The best dogs we've ever had have been shelter dogs. Plus you can give them a second chance considering a lot of those animals would be put to sleep you could save their lives

  • Danes are good! I would stay away from Weims though. I know of at least two personally that do not like kids! They are pretty high maintenace too. Love Danes though. Bull mastiffs are incredibly gentle too.

  • I have a 6 month old dane puppy. She is the most well behaved puppy I have ever met. In the house. When she's outside my 3 yo is not out there with her just cause well she's a huge puppy. Our only concern with them is she's a leaner when she comes up and down the steps. I would recommend a dane.

  • I was actually just looking into this for my sister, and one large breed that they said was really good with kids was a Newfounland.
