Why do people want rats as pets?

Okay I know they aren't diseased sewer rats or anything but I still don't get it. I've seen them in pet stores. I think they are just as ugly as wild ones, they are just gross to me. If people like them then good for them. I just don't get what people like about them is all.

  • If i saw a mouse even a tiny tiny "cute" on in my house that was wild I'd be snapping its butt in a rat trap and throwing it in a garbage sack. I don't get why people would buy them on purpose and have them live in their house. Blech. Its even worse when they let them crawl all of their arms and face and stuff. Makes me wanna gag.

  • I've had rats as pets, and they make wonderful pets. Their only downside is they only live 2-3 years. They are extremely clean - they consider us humans to be the dirty ones, and wash themselves (like a cat) thoroughly after being handled. They housetrain themselves to only go in their cage - many will even only use a certain spot in the cage, so it makes cleanup even easier. They're also very smart, learn their names, learn to come when called, and can learn tricks too. They're affectionate, like to play, like to cuddle. So there's actually a lot to like about them. ;-)

  • i used to breed them (and mice too) for a local pet store- they make great pets, are affectionate, highly intelligent, learn their names, to do tricks (i had one that would roll over deal when you said "cat's loose!"), and are all around pleasant creatures. they also are inexpensive to keep, and highly unlikely to carry disease/parasites. they do not incur the vets bills that larger animals do, and, well, i think they are adorable!

  • rats & mice make wonderful pets. They are less likely to bite then hamsters or guinea pigs.
