Do we know how old the Blessed Mother was when she had Jesus?

  • It was my understanding(and its been many years so I could be off)that she was a younger teen.

  • No one knows, we only know she was a young girl. My guess would be 15 to 17 years old.

  • In that time period she would have been married between 13-15 so since she wasn't officially married yet, I would say she was on the younger side of that age gap. Most likely around 13 or so.

  • No one knows for sure.  Based on an  early Christian text called the "Protoevangelium of James" she was pretty young by today's standards - between 12 and maybe 14.


    In the writing, when Mary was 3 she was dedicated to God and stayed in the temple.  When she was 12 the priests at the temple got to be worried that she would "defile" the temple (menstrating women were not allowed in the temple).  So an angel told one of them to and find a widower for her to marry and would protect her outside the temple and she could keep her vow of viriginity.  So Mary was bethroded to the widower Joseph and the Annunciation was apparently shortly after that.
