Has anyone heard what books Palin wanted banned?

What books offended her? Books on evolution, Harry Potter, or the standard books that keep getting banned like Huck Finn, Scarlet Letter, and To Kill a Mockingbird. Don't get me wrong banning any book that can be found in a public library is UN-AMERICAN but I'd like to know what kind of crazy she is.

  • I did...Its not true! Its completely false! The date that this supposed "ban" by Sarah Palin was way BEFORE any of the Harry Potter books was released.

  • Back in 1996, when she first became mayor, Sarah Palin asked the city librarian if she would be all right with censoring library books should she be asked to do so.
According to news coverage at the time, the librarian said she would definitely not be all right with it. A few months later, the librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, got a letter from Palin telling her she was going to be fired. The censorship issue was not mentioned as a reason for the firing. The letter just said the new mayor felt Emmons didn’t fully support her and had to go.
Emmons had been city librarian for seven years and was well liked. After a wave of public support for her, Palin relented and let Emmons keep her job.
This is about as close as you can get to what she did!

  • I think it's silly to ban any kind of book unless it tells you how to be a terrorist. I hope her heart was in the right place at the time, not trying to deprive kids of great literature for her own religious (or other) cause. Those books are classics. Even if it WAS back in 1996, it's still pretty silly. I mean, if those books did get banned, wouldn't they have to ban the whole fiction section, pretty much? Shakespeare? HE had some raw material, even for these days. I think it's sad, if it's true.

  • Are we going back to the days of Hitler where they had massive book burnings of classic literature? This story is hard to prove because it happened in 1996, but, from the research I did, Per numerous articles with local town members comments supporting these claims, Palin did send a letter to Emmons, the town librarian in 1996, stating she was going to be terminated because she didn't fully support the new mayor (Palin). The letter did not state anything pertaining to book censorship, a smart move on Palin's part.

Even if the censoring of books is not true, but, the attempted fiing of staff because they do not agree with your political positions is; it seems rather communist on Palin's part. I thought this was a democracy and every one had a right to their own views?

  • cont...............Libraries are suppose to be a reflection of classical and current literature. Book banning should not be a part of any library systems agenda. Books are an important part of a society that professes people have the freedom to express themselves
