My son works at an upscale grocery store that sells mostly organic. We buy fresh food every day. We get what's on sale and what looks good. We have almost no food waste.

funny you should ask.... at this moment I am printing out week by week from my gmail calendar the month of nov.
Usually I plan week by week but we have house guests this month and Im doing the 3 day breast cancer walk so I am doing more extensive planing.... that way I can make some items in batches of 2 or 3 to cover multiple dinners.

I plan meals for a month. It takes some time but it sure takes care of the hassle of trying to decide what's for dinner at 5 p.m.

I make a menu of meals for the week, but it's always subject to change. I make sure that when I go grocery shopping, I'll have enough for at least 7 meals in the house. But if I decide that I don't want (or don't have time to make) whatever's on the menu for one night, I can switch it up with another meal.

I make a 2 week menu out and then go grocery shopping. I don't have it mapped for day to day but i do know what we are having in a 14 day time period.

I plan what I'm going to make for the week so I can do my shopping accordingly. But I don't plan it day by day. It's more of, "We'll have lasagna, spaghetti, pizza, etc. this week," instead of, "We'll have lasagna Sunday, spaghetti Monday, pizza Tuesday, etc." That way I can make whatever I feel like making that night, but the semi-schedule helps me make sure I've got what I need to make it without having to make an extra trip to the store.
