What's the recommended age/weight/height for a child to sit in the backseat with no booster?

And does it vary state to state? We live in FL.

  • The Law varies from state to state, however it is safest for children to ride in a booster seat until they pass this "5 Step Test" regardless of their age/weight.

    1. Does the child sit all the way back against the auto seat?
    2. Do the child's knees bend comfortably at the edge of the auto seat?
    3. Does the belt cross the shoulder between the neck and arm?
    4. Is the lap belt as low as possible, touching the thighs?
    5. Can the child stay seated like this for the whole trip?

If you answered "no" to any of these questions, your child needs a booster seat to make both the shoulder belt and the lap belt fit right for the best crash protection. Your child will be more comfortable, too!

  • It depends on the state in which you live.

In mine, they have to be 8 or 4'9" to be without a booster.

It appears in FL that as long as they're 4 or older they don't have to be in a booster at all.

  • Check out this website for the current guidelines for each state: http://www.elitecarseats.com/custserv/custserv.jsp?pageName=car_seat_laws  Remember - these are just the minimum laws in each state and state laws may have changed since it was poated.

"Currently, there is a major push to enact laws that require children to be in a booster seat until the age of 8 or 80 lbs. As a general rule: Rear facing car seat / infant car seat until 1 year old and 20 lbs. Car seat until 4 years old and 40 lbs. Booster seat until 8 years old and 80 lbs."
