When did tips go up to 18%

The last 3 restaurants we visited since Sept. had a small note on the bottom of the receipt-
Stating basically to not forget your server with an 18% gratuity.
Seeing the dunning message was enough, but 18%?

  • 18% has been a standard for large groups for many years now. And while 15% has been common for a long time, I've been seeing suggestions of 20% for the past few years.

  • I don't understand why they dont' just pay servers a normal wage instead of requiring a set tip amount

  • If you don't serve good, you don't get a TIP, I don't care who it is.

I never knew about the 18%.

    I know a few servers....

  • servers make $2.13 an hour why would you bitch about having to leave someone a nice tip when you are running their asses off..having them fetch you stuff. if you dont have money to tip, dont go out to eat

  • I've never seen a waitress run. Never. Nor any worth 18%.

  • Why would you bitch about $2.13 an hour, go to school and get a better job!

Answer by Anonymous at 11:30 AM on Nov. 4, 2009

  • We rarely go out to eat, so that is a luxury for us and leaving someone a nice tip just because doesn't make any sense. They are lucky to have a tip at all, get a better job if you don't like working for tips or go to a better restaurant, I would starve to death on $2.13 an hour but completely understand why they don't make any more. What they spend like 7 minutes with each customer, so what.

  • i am a waitress and probably make more money than a lot of you dummys do in a day...i usually bring home about 150 dollars a day and it really pisses me off when i get crappy customers that dont tip what they know there is such thing as a DRIVE THRU.

Answer by shay1130 at 11:40 AM on Nov. 4, 2009

  • Don't be CHEAP!! Tip your servers. This is thier job people. I used to be a server and it is hard work....waiting on strangers hand and foot. And Anon 11:30....some people can't go to school and "get a better job"!! People are so rude.

Answer by Jem0582 at 11:42 AM on Nov. 4, 2009

  • I like working for tips...i've always enjoyed it. I only have to work between 4 and 6 hours and make the money i make and then go home and be a mommy
