Unfortunately, the Akaka amendment was more about politicizing veterans’ issues rather than addressing their real health care needs,” Dr. Coburn said.

He wants more accountability and details on where the money is going to ensure veterens are getting the best care. He doesn't want the money to be mismanaged and rushed through the government system and the money never make it to the veterens.

He also said this in 2006, "As a practicing physician, it has been my honor to have personally cared for hundreds of Oklahoma veterans. We can and must improve veterans’ health care by giving veterans greater control over the delivery of their care and by reducing costs, streamlining bureaucracy and encouraging the best medical practices."

In 2006~He wanted to go line by line and make sure the money was ACTUALLY going to veterans to give them the best care. Isn't that the accountability we should demand?

This isn't about 2006, its 2009 and do you believe EVERYTHING a politician says? Of course he will SAY the right things.... Apparently 13 major military and veteran groups disagree.

Sen. Coburn blocking bill: Objection is cost, not vets

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., is using Senate rules to block a vote on S 1963, a major veterans bill, unless he has the chance to offer amendments to pay for the new benefits it creates, especially stipends, health benefits, counseling and other programs aimed at family caregivers of seriously wounded combat veterans.

Coburn spokesman John Hart said the senator has questions about the new benefit, wondering why, if it is such a good thing for families, it is limited to helping only those of Iraq and Afghanistan combat veterans. But the main objection is cost.

“We are at a point in our history when we have to start paying for things,” Hart said.

Coburn has been in discussions with Senate leaders about the bill, but he objects to plans to pass the Veterans’ Caregiver and Omnibus Health Benefits Act of 2009 by voice vote and without amendments, Hart said.

It's funny, I don't recall him speaking out about an UNFUNDED $800 BILLION dollar Medicare Prescription bill????
