Thirteen major military and veterans groups have joined forces to try to force one senator — Republican Tom Coburn of Oklahoma — to release a hold that he has placed on a major veterans benefits bill.
Coburn has been identified by Senate aides as the lawmaker preventing consideration of S 1963, the Veterans’ Caregiver and Omnibus Health Benefits Act of 2009, by using an informal but legal practice of putting a hold on a bill.
Coburn’s staff did not respond to questions, but Senate aides said the first-term senator has expressed concern about creating new and unfunded benefits and wants the opportunity to amend the measure.
One of Coburn’s suggestions is to divert money from unspent economic and job stimulus programs to cover costs of new benefits for veterans and their families

He did this in 2006, too. “My support for veterans is unwavering and I believe keeping our commitment to those who risk all to fight for our freedom must be among the highest of our priorities. Unfortunately, the Akaka amendment was more about politicizing veterans’ issues rather than addressing their real health care needs,” Dr. Coburn said.
He wants more accountability and details on where the money is going to ensure veterens are getting the best care. He doesn't want the money to be mismanaged and rushed through the government system and the money never make it to the veterens.
He also said this in 2006, "As a practicing physician, it has been my honor to have personally cared for hundreds of Oklahoma veterans. We can and must improve veterans’ health care by giving veterans greater control over the delivery of their care and by reducing costs, streamlining bureaucracy and encouraging the best medical practices."
In 2006~He wanted to go line by line and make sure the money was ACTUALLY going to veterans to give them the best care. Isn't that the accountability we should demand?
This isn't about 2006, its 2009 and do you believe EVERYTHING a politician says? Of course he will SAY the right things.... Apparently 13 major military and veteran groups disagree.
Sen. Coburn blocking bill: Objection is cost, not vets
It's funny, I don't recall him speaking out about an UNFUNDED $800 BILLION dollar Medicare Prescription bill????
[2005] Senator McCain and his colleagues Senators John Ensign(R-NV), Sam Brownback (R-KS), Tom Coburn(R-OK), Jim DeMint(R-SC), Lindsey Graham(R-SC) and John Sununu (R-NH) have produced an impressive “Fiscal Watch Team Offset Package” serious spending reductions in major areas of domestic policy. .... the clear need to contain the explosion of government spending that is adding to the already mountainous unfunded liabilities of the federal entitlement programs—in particular Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.
~So HE DID work for reform of spending and oversight
They [Congress] didn't fix the right problem. It was done for political purposes. It is a dreadful bill [Medicare prescription-drug bill]. It made problems worse, not better.”~Tom Coburn
