How old does a male dog need to be to get fixed?

We have a 3 year old boston terrier. He is AKC registered and we got him when he was 6 or 8 weeks old. He has no balls. Could he have been fixed before we got him? He is really horny dog too.

  • Dogs with undescended testicles are at a greater risk for testicular cancer so I'd check to see if he's got his still and get him fixed asap if he does.

  • nope he has to be at least 6 months. at 8 weeks their "balls" lol arent dropped yet. their balls have to be dropped to even get fixed. but hes 3 years he is way old enough girl

  • So if he isn't fixed were are his balls? I keep forgetting to ask his vet.

  • They don't have to be 6 months, however most people do it at that age. It may be that he has undescended testicles.

  • They can be done before 6 months of age. 6 months is just what the older vet prefer. We did them as young as two months at the spay/ neuter clinic where i worked. He may have undescende testicles it is more common for it to happen to just one but it is possible for both not to drop. As far as the humpy goes it is not sexual that is a domanance thing. It is possible he was fixed before you got him however the breeder would have told you and it would have in the paperwork.

  • We had a corgi like that growing up--- his testicles just never decended (so they were up in his body). Getting him fixed cost a little more because of it (not as easy).

Unless you have a contract to breed him, or a reason why you think his genetics should be passed on to subsequent generations, get him fixed. It'll most likely help with the super horny-ness.

  • When we adopted our kitty we had to have him fixed when he was old enough. They did it at 3 mos.

  • my vet told me 6 months before u can. not before

  • 6 months is the usual age, but it can be done as early as 8wks. Most rescues/shelters make sure the animal is spayed/neutered before it is adopted out.
