  • music. You can make drums out of oatmeal tubes, maracas with beans in a sealed bottle or tupperware, symbols with lids, other drums with bowls and spoons, microphone from empty papertowel rolls. (you can sing head, shoulders, knees and toes, the abc song, 10 little indians)

education. I have found that so many toys marketed for babies 6-12months, have been so helpful in teaching my toddler her alphabet. The leap frog learning letters, and learning table and caterpillar, and little tool bench toy. I can teach one and play with the other at the same time.

entertainment. offers a lot of games that are fun and education. At this age, its better for you to participate with them, but there are so many games they can do to help learn letter recognition and sounds.

  • The dollartree has little foam puzzles with 9 squares and numbers on them. If your 16 month old still puts things in her mouth, these are great since even i cant take a bite out of one. You can construct things and use the pictures as lessons and number recognition.

megablocks are great for color recognition, and you can count how mnay blocks on each piece, or how many blocks you've stacked. They help spark imagination, too.

Little people toys like the learning zoo are great to identify the animals, you could check a local consignment shop or craigslist for a good deal. The mat that comes along teaches phonics, too.

    Have fun!
