Is frozen and then thawed breast milk as good as fresh?

  • It's better than formula. It's pretty much just as good. Freezing doesn't kill anything in it, it may alter the taste just a tiny bit, but most babies don't notice. It's better than losing (dumping) extra milk too. Not to mention if you have a really good supply and baby decides to self-wean, you can still give the frozen (thawed) milk in a bottle or cup for a longer period of time.

  • Like PP said, frozen milk is better than formula, fresh better than frozen and from the tap, best.

    Freezing does kill some of the anti-bodies and enzymes and any food left for any period of time will start to loose nutrients. So, if you have the option... straight from the tap whenever possible, fresh as the next choice and frozen as a last resort.

    Also, freeze and dethaw some first to check that you don't make too much lipase. It will cause your milk to change taste (and it will smell and taste bad). Some women have the issue, not all... flash boiling before freezing will fix it.
