Explain this?

I tried asking my husband this but can't explain it very good so he has no idea what I'm talking about. Sometimes I read old stories and they omit names & dates. Like Washington would be W------n with a solid line drawn. Can't remember what authors do this but have seen it in several stories, most date from the middle-late 1900s I think. Heck they may even date to the 70s lol but I think it's mostly the older stories. Anybody know why, or even what I'm talking about? thanks :)

  • OoOhhh...or abbreviating William to Wm? I've literally seen people's names like "John Wm. Smith III". Seriously?

But. I don't know why they did it. Perhaps laziness...perhaps it was trendy then. Trends and being fashionable has always been important.
