  • Normal! My daughter said her first word at 7.5 months (Hi!) and was speaking in complete sentences at 18 months.

You may want to visit your local library and pick up a book on child development. I really like Touchpoints by T. Berry Brazelton. Dr. Brazelton has a great website:

    Enjoy your little one!!

  • yes - very normal. Usually even when they start saying "mama" or "dada" they don't do it with intent for a couple more months. My son is 12 months and says mama, dada, rock rock and uh oh. You don't need to worry, just enjoy the sweet sounds that your baby does make!

  • At that age, if they say any "words" it's usually just them copying sounds, not actually talking. It's NOT normal for a 6 month old to talk, to mimic sounds sure...but to talk, no.

  • its ok!! my daughter was silent until almost 12 months as far as words go.. she'd make plenty of sounds and babble, but no talking.. that comes a little later.

  • We didn't have any words until after a year. I would be astounded to hear of a 6 month old saying anything and actually meaning it.... they're just practicing sounds at that age. My 8 month old does "say" mama and dada, but I don't think he connects them to us yet... they're just sounds.

  • My daughter only started even saying "mama" at 6 months old. She is 11mos right now, and only knows a few words. It's not abnormal for a 6 month old to not say anything. Even at 1 years old, I would think it'd still be normal.

  • I am sorry it is not normal for a 6 month old to say words. Even if they are saying mama or dada they do not know what it means. Like previous posters have said they may just be mimicking sounds. Don't stress about it! :)
