Is the belief of Guardian Angels a biblical one?

Do you believe we each have a Guardian Angel assigned to watch over us and protect us throughout our lifetime? Is this a spirit being created by God or could it be the soul/spirit of an ancestor or deceased loved one? What do you think when your GA fails you in some way? If it is a biblical belief, please provide scriptures. Thanks!

  • I am muslim and i believe in that we have guardian angels who are commanded by the will of God and who do not disobey God in anything. basically they hear and they obey. Angels are a separate creation from humans and animals. Therefore i do not believe them to be our ancestors or dead people becoming falling angels. Angels are made entirely from light. While humans came from clay(dirt).

  • Do you have scripture that supports this ---

Al-Baqara [2:177] It is not Al-Birr (piety, righteousness, and each and every act of obedience to Allâh, etc.) that you turn your faces towards east and (or) west (in prayers); but Al-Birr is (the quality of) the one who believes in Allâh, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, the Prophets and gives his wealth, in spite of love for it, to the kinsfolk, to the orphans, and to Al-Masâkin (the poor), and to the wayfarer, and to those who ask, and to set slaves free, performs As-Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât), and gives the Zakât, and who fulfill their covenant when they make it, and who are patient in extreme poverty and ailment (disease) and at the time of fighting (during the battles). Such are the people of the truth and they are Al¬Muttaqûn (pious - see V.2:2)

  • From hadith we have the explanation of the recording angels.

    Bukhari hadith,
To make the Heart Tender (Ar-Riqaq) [76:498] Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: The Prophet narrating about his Lord I'm and said, "Allah ordered (the appointed angels over you) that the good and the bad deeds be written, and He then showed (the way) how (to write). If somebody intends to do a good deed and he does not do it, then Allah will write for him a full good deed (in his account with Him); and if he intends to do a good deed and actually did it, then Allah will write for him (in his account) with Him (its reward equal) from ten to seven hundred times to many more times: and if somebody intended to do a bad deed and he does not do it, then Allah will write a full good deed (in his account) with Him, and if he intended to do it (a bad deed) and actually did it, then Allah will write one bad deed (in his account) ."

  • At-Tariq [86:4] There is no human being but has a protector over him (or her) (i.e. angels in charge of each human being guarding him, writing his good and bad deeds).

As muslims we believe in angels, and we believe that we are watched by recording angels that register our deeds.  The Quran and hadith mention angels frequently. and the belief in angels is part of our creed.

We believe angels to be separate beings they are not dead ancestors

Angels can only help us with the permission of Allah, it is Allah who orders them to help us. So they do not fail us, and neither does Allah (God).  We believe mischief on this earth is spread at the hands of men.

  • Do you believe we each have a Guardian Angel assigned to watch over us and protect us throughout our lifetime? YES
Is this a spirit being created by God or could it be the soul/spirit of an ancestor or deceased loved one? Both depending on the need.
What do you think when your GA fails you in some way? They don't really fail you. If something happened, you had a lesson to be learned from that experience and they could not interfere in that.
But I don't believe the angels were created by any god. so not quite the whole spirit being created by god part of the question. Angels are not exclusive to christianity and it's beliefs. Many other religionsalso include angels.

  • Catholics do not believe that we transform into angels after death. From the Catholic Catechism:

336 From its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession. "Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life."  Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God.

I think one of the places we get the concept of guardian angels is Matthew 18:10 "See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.

  • op.. i will gather the ayats or narrations from our Prophet (peace be upon him) as soon as i wake up from a nap( i can hardly keep my eyes open).. but here are two to start.. this ayats speaks of how the Angels are commanded to do things and they do not disobey. and how they are guardians and do not disobey...

"O you who believe! Save yourselves and your families from a Fire (Jahannam) whose fuel is Men and Stones, over which are (appointed) angels stern and severe, who flinch not (from executing) the Commands they receive from God, but do (precisely) what they are commanded." At-Tahrim 66:6
