Advice for a cranky baby...

My son is 4 1/2 months old, FF 8 oz bottles every 3 hours (his demand, not a schedule), has about 8-12 diapers a day and has a bowel movement anywhere between 1 & 4 days apart.

The past couple of days he's been eating less and less, has been fighting sleep tooth & nail, and when he does sleep he thrashes around most of the night. Last night he screamed on a 15 minute car ride (which he NEVER does usually). He's been very gassy, much fussier than normal and is eating only about 4 ounces. He is not running fever, but today he's had less soiled diapers (only about 4). He's been showing signs of teething but no swollen gums, just lots of drool (LOTS) & gumming everything he can find to put in his mouth.

Has anybody had any issues like this? Does this sound like teething or maybe sickness coming... first time mommy, so I have no comparisons! Thanks! P.S. I'll be calling his doc in the morning.

  • Sounds like my 4 month old. Can't help a whole lot, but I think its an age thing. And your not alone if it helps.

  • A lot of babies begin "teething" long before a tooth shows up.
There could be any of several things going on here:
slowing down period (opposite of growth spurt)
    upset tummy
a combination of any of the above

He's gone done from 8-12 diapers a day to 4? Wow.
Is he eating 4 oz per feeding? How many feedings per day?
I don't have ANY experience with formula fed babies, but I'm concerned about the number of diapers.

  • It was just today that he had 4 or 5 diapers. He had a good bowel movement as well. Even when he slows down his eating (like this time is only every other bottle or so, not every bottle during the day) he has plenty of diapers. As long as he's getting 4 ounces per feeding, I'm not too worried, but today he's acting like his tummy is really upset. I just feel helpless sometimes! I was at work during all this today, so I'm just describing what my parents told me.

  • Sounds like teething , but maybe it could be the kind of formula he is on . My daughter went through every kind out there after we found out she couldnt have breast milk . We ended up putting her a corn based formula. ( she was allergic to all things dairy, she couldnt even have soy ) Deffinatly call the DR. he will know what to do. But get him in quick because with him not have a good amount of diapers there could be a blockage or something.

Definitely get him into the Dr. tomorrow and tell him/her everything you told us. I just want to be sure he's hydrated enough.

  • WHat kind of bottle does he take? Try something with drop-in bottle liners. It would not hurt to have the doctor look at him to be on the safe side.
