What is a good size bike for a 5 year old?

The have 12" wheel bikes on super sale at Toys R Us, but I'm not sure if that's a good size for my niece. Any info would be much appreciated! Thanks!

  • You definitely want there first bike to be smaller, so they can control it and of course take off the training wheels.

Depending on there height, I would think it might be too big, My son is 6 and he is starting to ride a 12 inch next summer. If they know how to ride, really good that it might work, but it is heavier.

  • It depends on the height of the kid. Measure the inseam and go from there. My almost 4 year old is about to get a 16" bike.

  • If a bike is too small, they can't ride it properly. Definitely measure.

  • My 5 year old is 45" tall and has been riding a 16" bike without training wheels since she was 4.

  • That sounds too small. My 4 year old has a 12 inch bike and it's almost too small. He's petite, to say it nicely. Try a 14 or a 16, but definitely 'try it on' before you buy it.
