Are we a Growing Nanny Government?

Nanny state can be defined as a government that brings in legislation that it considers is in the people's best interests but that is regarded by some as interfering and patronizing.

Why do some people need the government to hold their hand and allow the government determine what is in their best interest without knowing the full details of the government's plan or intentions?

  • Yes. We need a safety net, but we are moving beyond safety. We are creating an entitlement society, which is keeping our poor, poor. The middle class is slowly relinquishing their rights to government control.

Zero Tolerance rules and paranoia are over-riding people's sensibleness. People feel powerless, and then the government makes another law in the name of safety and education. However, instead of making people feel more safe, these laws make people feel even less empowered.

  • I believe it started a looong time ago, but it has gained a lot of momentum once we took God out of the schools (as well as any reference to any religious belief). In return for taking away God with one hand, they are giving us what they think we need with the other. So that we don't need to worry, thus we don't need God. That is my opinion, anyway.

  • Yeah, it did start a long time ago--maybe a century ago. social security and the tax act...all for the benefit of the public, right? If you want to use the "nanny state" term...overused as it is, then you might as well admit there HAs been a Nanny State for a century. ANd if you think the government wants too much control, that's nothing new, either. SO...if you want to complain, then come up with some solutions. Otherwise,it is pointless to complain.

Who's complaining?? Besides you about this question~ I asked questions in hopes to look at HOW to approach the solution. Questions like:Why do some people need the government to hold their hand? Why do some people allow the government determine what is in their best interest without knowing the full details of the government's plan or intentions?

A growing Nanny state is expensive. Are generations growing up thinking they are ENTITLED to services just because they exist?

  • People can't come up with solutions if they can't pinpoint and identify the problem. That's what the questions here do for some. It helps the them decide just exactly why they are uneasy about something and just exactly what it is. Don't quit asking questions. It's what keeps our country strong.

  • People don't need it. It is people who think that it will be easier to let the government take over. Just sit back, let the government look after all of your needs. After all, we aren't even smart enough, as a people, to do something as complicated as invent a computer, discover how to separate blood plasma, send men to the moon, or develop DNA testing. We need to be taken care of because we are just lazy and stupid. The government will give us every thing we need. The USSR fell because after just 50 years, they were broke, sick, and starving. "Nanny" state sounds so nurturing. If the government is big enough to look after me, it is also big enough to control me. No thank you if you please.
