How young are grandmas these days???

I'm 39 years old, and have always looked younger than my age. I was in line at the grocery store and got asked if my 15 month old baby was my grandaughter! I had even just come from getting my hair colored and styled! I just smiled and said she's my baby; we got a late start. I know it should not bother me, but it does. However, with the growing number of teen moms I'm gussing grandmas are also much younger these days.

  • Well, my MIL is 61 with her 1st grandbaby! My mom was in her mid-40's. HOnestly I think it just depends on where you live, the socioeconomic status of the people there, level of education, etc. In places w/higher cost of living, I think ppl. generally tend to wait longer to have kids. My DH is 31 and we just had a baby. None of his urban friends have kids or even know anyone w/kids. We are considered very young by them! While in my family, I am considered old at 28! It all depends on who is doing the asking, maybe where they come from, everyone has babies really young. A coworker of mine is a grandpa at 40. He had his kid at 20 and she had hers at 20.

  • My sister regularly sees 28 year old grandmothers in her practice. I had my daughter at 35, and have been mistaken for her grandmother more than once. I hope to not become a grandmother before I turn 60...

  • A person doesn't even have to be a teen parent to have a grandchild at 39-40 years old. My mom was 40 years old when my brother had his first baby, he was 20.

  • I once met a 27 year old grandmother. She told me she had her son at 12, then her son had a baby with his gf when he was 15, and she also had a 3 yo daughter with her! I thought that was the craziest thing ever! I also know a woman whose daughter is getting ready to have a baby and she is 14, and that will make her a 30 yo grandma.
