My dog got in a fight with something today... he is normally very very hyper he is a young cattle dog, and i let him back in the house after he ate and went out to potty and he was very very lethargic and had no energy at all and i found little bloody wounds all over his back legs and he even coughed up a little blood!! Well iv only had him about 3 weeks and when i got him they said he was all caught up on shots or a year... well looking through his book it looks like he has had everything BUT a rabies shot!!! He is in his kennel now sleeping he is eating and drinking but breathing heavy... if he got in a fight with a rabid animal would he already be showing signs of rabies?? iv looked at alot of info online and it says 21-80 days... I dont know what to do!!

  • You should call your vet, im sure they have an after hours number. If you've been exposed to rabies you will have to be treated as well.. GL

  • I agree, your dog should be seen. It is probably too soon for rabies symptoms, although he may still have been exposed, I am very sorry to say, poor pup. But it sounds as though he has internal injuries and may be seriously ill.

  • If the dog has had the other shots it would have had the rabies. Symptoms don't happen this soon. Your dog could have injuries you can't see. You could keep him quiet and hydrated and hope for the best or take him to an emergency vet.

  • Rabies infection ranges from about 10 days up to seven years, so no, your dog isn't showing symptoms of rabies. It does sound like he is in pain, and maybe a bit shocky. The fact that he's coughing up blood means he may have internal injuries that you can't see.

Even though he ate earlier, don't feed him over the next 12 hours. If you have any pedialyte, give him that instead of water, and wash out the small wounds you can see on his legs. Check his heart rate (normal for large dogs 70-120/min. med/80-120 small/90/140 toy 100/160). Stand behind him and place both hands on his ribs and count for a full minute. Normal respiration is 15-30 breaths per minute. Signs of shock include pale gums, weak rapid pulse, rapid breathing, cool extremities.

If he's shocky, he needs a vet ASAP! If you can't get him to one tonight, keep him warm and only give pedialyte. Digesting food uses too much energy and actually cont.

  • cont. can make him worse. Keep him warm! Cover him with a blanket (and give him one to lay on too), and/or keep him near a heater. You can apply plain triple antibiotic ointment to his wounds (none with a pain reliever or 'extra' stuff). Because he coughed up blood, don't give him any aspirin or anything until he's been checked by a vet! Don't use any peroxide as it tends to damage tissue. You can use baby wipes and won't have to rinse anything.

What he really needs is subq fluids and possibly other care, so get him to a vet as soon as you can. If his pupils seem to be dilating or become fixed the only thing that will help him is a vet.

On the other hand, it's possible that by morning he will be up and bouncing around. Sending good thoughts and a gentle scritch for your pup (and you!). Hope it all works out ok for you both.
