Anyone else having a freshly slaughtered turkey/doing it yourself?

Our hosts are doing it~ I've never had it so fresh!

Are there some other families that like to "do their own," too?

  • I don't think so. Can't say for sure though. I don't cook for Thanksgiving. We always eat at my Grandmothers' and at MILs. I know that my Grammas' bird will be frozen, she always buys it frozen, but my MIL has her meal catered. She loves to entertain for the holidays but she works too much to cook herself and would never dream of letting me do it (rolls eyes), so she pays the pros. I can't say for sure if the caterers use a frozen turkey but I figure they do.

  • We get ours fresh from a Turkey Farm, we can pick the turkey we want, the farm does the "dirty work" then we take it home and cook it ourselves. However, I do make all of the side dishes using fresh fruits or vegetables and desserts from scratch! :o)

  • I'm a vegetarian so I don't eat turkey on Thanksgiving. I eat tofurkey, lol. My parents have never done that though...although, we have wild turkey that run around where I love constantly. If I see them on the side of the road I'm always yelling out the window "run away!!!!" lol.
I'm sure it'll taste better (though, I don't like the way meat tastes...lol) than a processed turkey.

  • Yes. My SIL and BIL raise turkeys specifically for Thanksgiving and Christmas. They have for the last 5 or 6 years and plan to continue to do it forever, as far as I know. We always go to their house, so we get the fresh bird, too.
