If a healthcare bill, any healthcare bill was funded ONLY by a "sin-tax" would you support it?

I ask this because I got a flier from a local U.S. Rep, requesting those that support the healthcare bill being funding solely on another federal tax increase on tobacco, all types, alcohol, candy and soda, to write in to her and she would forward the support. She gave stats of all the costs smoking first and secondhand causes, such as ear infections and asthma in kids, lung cancer stroke, chronic strep throat, etc.

What do you think?

  • No. I don't support taxation for something they can reform without cost to the taxpayers. If they would change regulations on insurance they would be able to make insurance more affordable. I don't see the point in destroying the current system for the hope that a new system will net better results.

  • Sin tax inevitably makes the system dependant on sinners. It makes the "sins" into a Catch-22 of sorts- they don't want us to smoke because of the health problems it causes, but if everyone quit smoking the tax revenue would be lost. Therefore the government actually ends us having a vested interest in people continuing the "sins." I think it makes more sense to have higher health care premiums for people who smoke, drink, eat poorly, etc. Or maybe to reward people who make healthy choices with lower premiums. Just my two cents.

  • Unfortunately, we are a greedy, impatient, self-centered nation.

We want the best of everything.

    We want it ALL, NOW.

We want it all now and for a bargain.

REFORM-hell NO- not us. It's mine-

Tightening our belt- that's for someone else, not us-

It seems we have the temperaments and critical thinking skills of toddlers.

We are our own worst enemy. We talk of terrorists, yet we sabotage ourselves with our lazy habits each and ever day. The government and all elected officials are included in the collective, "We". You don't have the $$$- charge it. You don't have insurance- hit the ER, someone Else will pay for it. You don't have the funds- borrow from CHINA. Implosion-

  • So Mary..how do you feel about the fact that private healthcare industries make profits mainly off of the "sinners"?

Those who engage in whats classifies as "risky behaviors" like drinking, smoking, living in an urban area and being a woman?

  • sriveroc, those sinners are paying for their own insurance. It's not like expecting those that don't sin to pay for the sinners.

  • living in an urban area and being a woman?

No, they just want to treat us all like we are urban women and that being female is a sin. But you seem okay with that.

  • NO. when you start down that road, you start curtailing people's choices, because almost everybody does have some limit somewhere to how much money they can afford to spend.
