Small girls, C-section?

I am a pretty small girl. I weighed 101 lbs. at 5'2" before I got pregnant and at 3 mos. weight about 109. Yesterday at my doc's appt. he said that oftentimes slender, petite girls have small birth canals and will have to get c-sections. Did this happen to anyone out there? Did they specifically tell you it was due to your size? I really want to avoid having one but I know it's not really avoidable. Thanks.

  • I was 100 lbs when I got pregnant. and didn't have to get a c-section. You don't have to get a c-section just because your doctor says you MAY be to small.

  • I normally weigh about 105, I am 4'11. I have had five children without c-section, or complications. Don't stress over that now. Best wishes.

  • Your Dr's statement somewhat concerns me. Outward size, unless you have a form of Dwarfism is rarely applicable to inner size and birth canal capability. I myself am a large big boned woman..and there was no way to tell I have an inadequate pelvis. Relax until it's time to worry about it. I might explore this further with my Dr...or look into finding one who didn't seem quite so C-section anxious.

  • He didnt' make it sound inevitable, but said that even though I"m going to have a great pregnancy, it doesn't necessarily mean I'll have a great labor. Then he said the thing about my being small and possibly having to get a c-section. I'm changing docs anyway 'cause he's retiring but that little tidbit made me a bit uneasy.

  • I'm 5'4 and with my first pregnancy was about 110 pounds, when it came time to deliver I had an emergency c-section (not as bad as it sounds), Be very upfront with your doc. If you don't want the c-s tell him/her and let them know you want a vaginal delivery unless absolutely necessary, and yes with my daughter i also had a c-s because the hospital were I had them wouldn't allow VBAC's (vaginal birth after cecerian).

  • Oh, the first c-s had nothing to do w/ anything my doc thought about my size. My son's head just wouldn't fit through my pelvis.
