What is the going rate for babysitting??

I work at a day care center. Have also babysat in the past since i've been 10-11yrs old. I will be watching two kids today an infant and a 3 1/2yr old. The mother wants to know what to give me. And I am not sure. I will have them at my house from 8am-5/5:30pm. What should I tell her?

  • That is a full 9 hour day of babysitting so you should charge for your time while watching them, providing age appropriate activities, snacks, lunch, and naps. A fair price for the little ones would be at a minimum 9.00 per hour. Have fun!

  • about 7-8$ per hour since it's two kids. are you and their mom friends?

  • Yes, I am providing lunch for the 3 1/2yr old. I have a 7yr old and she picked out the lunch for them both to eat today... The baby is 8months old and on baby food-so the mom brought his. I will be doing small activities with the 3 1/2yr old and my daughter. And giving them both naps after lunch time, that is what they are used to mon-fri at day care. This is one of the moms that brings her children to the child care, that I have worked at for over 5yrs. I watched them 2wks ago on a friday night. It was a few mins shy of 2hrs and she paid me $50.00 I haven't babysat in a while, so i really didn't except to get that much...But, she asked me if that wa enough.... So I thought I would come here and ask.

  • Man, and to think that when I was a kid, I was happy to get $1.00 an hour plus a tip. Wow, that shows my age, huh?!! My daughter is 14 now and we never had a sitter for her, so I had no idea what sitters got today. Glad I didn't have to pay one, kinda makes going out very expensive, doesn't it?

  • Depends where you live. Here in S. FL we pay our babysitters $10 -12 an hour.

And I got $35. That is NOT the going rate. lol. I was pissed.

  • Kat770-I would have been pissed also.... I got more today than I would have if I would have had work.

  • If today was an actual day for me to work and not a day that we have off(not paid) than i would have only made 70-75 that is w/o the taxes LOL.......And taking care of 4 infants myself.
