gentian violet

How much/how often do I give this to my 3 month old for thrush. The doctor said not to put it in her mouth at all but I so often hear that its what works. The doc prescribed nystatin and the pharmasist said to put that on me too. What are your thoughts on that? Thanks!

  • Safer to go ahead and use the nystatin. Gentian violet shouldn't be swallowed and your LO will do that. Use the Nystatin as directed.

  • My DD had trush and we got nystatin. I put it in her mouth and on me. You also have to be very careful and clean your bras everyday and your shirts and even your bath towels. Anything that touches your breast or her mouth has to be cleaned daily or you can reinfect yourselves. My friend had the same problem but used gentain violet. She did put it in her DD's mouth and on her breasts. The down side to that is that it turns EVERYTHING purple. She had to throw away her bras and towels and onesies her DD wore when she took the violet bc it stains everything. That is why we stuck with the nystatin-it does not ruin clothes.

  • DD and I have had thrush many times. Gentian Violet is perfectly safe to use, and in my experience, works much better than nystatin, which just irritated our thrush more! Try to get the .5% solution, but if you cannot, I have had no issues with the 1% though it does sting a little. Use a clean cotton swab and rub it over the inside of her mouth once a day, and use another clean one to rub it on your nipples once a day. I did her mouth and my nipples at different times, to reduce the purple rolling down my chest from drool! LOL! Also, wash any clothing that comes in contact with the milk with vinegar and eating a lot of unsweetened yogurt helps! Be sure to also sanitize all bottle nipples and pacifiers after every use if she takes them. If you need any more info, feel free to contact me!
