When you ovulate, how long can the egg remain?

I know everything else about ovulation except this. For example, I ovulate on the 1st, and that's the day my egg dropped to be fertilized, obviously, but how long can it remain there?

  • It lives about 24 hrs. That's why you need to have sex right before you ovulate. Once the egg is there, the chances are pretty low the sperm will reach it if you dont have any there "waiting in the wings" so to speak.
