Which do you (your family) prefer: Hamsters or Gerbils ?

My DD is 7.5 years-old and asking for a small pet of her own (raised with dogs & cats so far).
Anyone have any advice?

  • I agree with a rat, most hamsters I've know, even the dwarf hamsters I breed and handled from day 3 of birth eventually got mean and I handled them every day for their whole lives. The rats however that I cared for in college, one became "my" rat, though I couldn't take her home rather than her get euthanized for snake food like the rest I got her rescued :) She was a sweet heart and made me love rats. Rats are about twice the size of gerbils, but they make up for it in sweetness. Gerbils are nice and bite less than hamsters but are more jumpy than rats. Mice are very sweet too, I bred mice for awhile and loved them, so that is an option. Males of either rats or mice smell worse than gerbils, but thats why I always prefered females. Rats need a cage rabbit size or bigger (solid flooring would be best though) make sure spacing isn't too big though. Mice could be fine in a 10 gallon aquarium with a mesh lid than can lock, (cont.

  • Get a rat instead. They're intelligent, clean, and sociable. Unlike a hamster or gerbil. They can also learn to use a litter box.

  • Really?? Wow, a rat... hmmm... never thought of that. Do they need a larger, smaller cage, different accessories?

I loved the movie "Ratatouille" which is irrelevant, haha!

  • Can a rat live in the same sized quarters as a hamster & with the same kind of gear or do we need rat-specific housing?
(Sorry! I know nothing about rats!)

  • You'll need something bigger as rats are much bigger than hamsters. I use a ferret cage for my males and my female's cage is made out of an old bookcase. Of course, those cages can hold about 7 rats, lol.

I can answer just about any questions you might have about rats if you wanna message me.
