  • similar to monastic living..giving up worldy goods/materialism, denying one's personal wants desires..possibly in a communical setting (monastery, monks, sisterhood)

  • Avoiding the worldly things, --- as in defintion, severe abstinance.

As muslims, while we are to abandon that which we are prohibitted, and avoid bad things, we do not believe that abandoning that which is good and permitted brings any benefit. It is a religion of moderation the middle course, and you can do too much, for example it is prohibited to continously fast, to exhaust yourself by staying awake all night every night in prayer, and also giving up marriage as a way of pleasing Allah is prohibited, In fact marriage is said to be half of the faith. and is encouraged.

Of course that is not an excuse for going too far in the other direction either LOL, the MIDDLE COURSE, which means more than just the mininum to get by , Extra prayers extra fasting, extra charity, extra good deeds. -- but not to excess.

Or as a hermit. Generally speaking living an ascetic life means giving up everything that isn't necessary to survival & limiting what is necessary in order to focus all of your attention on spiritual endeavors.
