Abut fixing a dryer

Well our dryer broke. It would heat up but wouldn't spin so we figured it was the belt. We ordered the belt and today decided to tackle replacing it. Well we were right about the old belt, we didn't even have to cut the old belt off, it was broken. So any who we were following instructions to loop the belt under the idler pulley and attach it to the dryer shaft. Well when I went to do that, there was no idler pulley. The bracket was there that holds it in place but no idler pulley. Before, the dryer worked fine... the pulley didn't just sprout legs and disappear. We looked all around but couldn't find it. How can this be possible? The pulley is what is supposed to keep the belt tight. Can the dryer work without it? Could it have fallen out somewhere that we missed? WTH is going on?
