Why cant women fight in combat?

(This is stemming from another post.) Ive always wondered why women were not allowed in combat but I thought it was maybe because of rape, which can happen to men as well. I also thought it might have to do with her menstrual cycle?

What is the reason? Is there even a reason?

  • I am constantly amazed by the lack of information on the internet!

Please take a few moments and do some research; you will find history is FULL of female warriors who were just as brave; just as prodigious on the battle field as their male counterparts. Not only were women on the battle field; some of them led the men into the fray.

Please don't buy into the hype that you can not be as strong/tough/resilient as a man. Men come in all sizes just as women do; yes some men will be larger and some will not the guys have to face that same fact.

Gailll on pg 1 has it right; because our gov't decided that our society did not want to see women; mothers come home in body bags. They were needed to stay here and raise the kids and support the men; to keep up morale. If women started dying in a foreign war the public outcry for the end of said war would have been deafening.

  • Because men are in charge. And men do not want us there.

  • I THINK part of the reason is that its a distraction to the men. Men are going to try and protect the woman even to their own detriment. Also, the consequences of what can be done to a woman caught on the front lines is worse than a man.

  • "People don't want women coming home in body bags."

Not my reason but the real reason. We as a nation when decisions were being made about the role of women in the military did not want to put women in that kind of risk. I think there are practical reasons that are based on generalizations like women have less upper body strength. Those kinds of reason used to be given for limiting the work of women in the police, as firefighters, and as EMS.

  • because as much as people may not want to believe it, Men are not equal to women and women are not equal to men.

  • Women are not as strong as men physically. Some things are just physics not gender bias.

  • All of those are good reasons. I don't think the military has an official reason for not allowing it, though. "Just because it's not allowed" is the basic rule of thumb.

And what CAN happen to a woman who is captured is the exact same thing that can happen to a man (minus testicle torture or castration). It's just that it happens more often to women.

  • My husband was military. He was infantry, which are on the front lines and women were not allowed into his until.

He says women are not allowed on the front lines partially due to their cycles. What is a woman going to do about bleeding when stuck in a fox hole for weeks at a time with no shower and no sanitary supplies. He also said that adrenline and stress run high on the front lines of a combat situation. During war, men go back to their more carnal nature. He said that a woman on the front lines in this situation would be a liability and distraction and would end up being raped.

  • The reason being if a woman and a man are captured the "bad guys" would torture the woman in which no man would want to witness. A woman being raped and tortured in front of them they are more likely to give up information to protect the woman.
