  • You need to only do what you want to do. Don't do what society or family deems neccessary for a joyous holiday. We downsized our holiday years ago and have found it to be so much more enjoyable. We don't put up a full size tree, a table top pre lit tree is all we have and limit our decorations. We bake whatever we want and cook whatever we want. We only buy gifts for our own family (DH, myself, and kids) our parents get gift cards to their favorite store or restaurant, and we get our mail man a gift and also our neighbors (they keep an eye on our place when we are working out of town). If the kids are sick of being cooped up have them do arts and crafts or let them bake something (ignore the messes). Bills come 12 months out of the year not only at Christmas, deal with it like you do every other month. We put space between us and family that are issues with us, we do not miss the drama.

  • Make homemade gifts for friends and family members. It saves money, most people love them (well, I do anyway), and it will give the kids something to do while they're cooped up. My oldest LOVES crafts, so it's a great past time while we're inside keeping warm. Relax and mentally tell yourself you are going to enjoy the holiday and not let it all get to you. Think about what you do have done vs. what you have left to do. Listen to some Christmas tunes and read Christmas stories with the kids. Catch their excitement and hold onto it. Go for a drive and look at Christmas lights one evening. Oh, there's so much. It's just such a wonderful time of the year, don't let living keep you from enjoying LIFE! :)
