How to get melted plastic off of an electric heating element?

I had a cutting board on the stove, and turned on the wrong burner. The cutting board melted to the heating element. Does anyone know how to get the plastic off? Will it just scrape off?

  • duh, i just reread it, it's an electric element. ok....i would endure the smell for awhile and turn the element back on warm and start scraping with a metal spatula you can throw away. i would think if it were to just get really warm you could almost just pry or peel off the plastic as it started to soften up. then turn it on high, and let it burn off any residual plastic while windows are open and fans are turning quickly. plastic fumes are known to cause migraines though, and i know you don't need that.

  • I agree with previous poster.......and DO make sure you have the range vent on and maybe a fan or back door open......the fumes can get bad!

I turned a burner on and once had a plastic bowl fall on the electric burner and it was not so bad to really get off but it was heck smelling those fumes!
