  • maybe phlegm. the red may be blood, a sign of bronchitis. you should go see a doctor as soon as you can.

  • Don't worry yet. It's a mucous plug and it's better out than in. if you start to have pain or wheezing while breathing go to your doctor or a prompt care. the red is blood from broken capillaries in your lings. You are coughing so hard they are rupturing. take mucinex to thin the secretions so you can cough them out easier. if it is keeping you up at night you can try any OTC cough suppressent.

  • but if its blood, it can be bronchitis, you really need to get that checked out. mucinex might not be what you need.

  • well see thats the weird thing is i haven't been coughing ALOT just here and there and it doesn't keep me up but im breastfeeding so i can't take just about any thing i was thinking about hot tea but i like sugar in mine and i know i should avoid sugar

  • Anon makes a fair point. However, blood in sputum is not the indicator for bronchitis. Color really doesn't matter. Sudden fever, pain, difficulty breathing and strider are major signs to get the hospital ASAP.

  • There are a few thisngs you can take while breastfeeding. call your lactation consultant for a list. if you don't have one, your local hospital should be able to get a number for you. The pharmacist maybe able to help you too.

  • go see a doctor, dont take our advice. i'm in the medical field and i dont like to mess with my head, chest or lungs, i run straight to the doctor. it may be nothing, but better safe than sorry. phlegm accompanied with blood doesnt sound great. when someone starts to wheeze its because theres some kind of inflammation. Go see a doctor, only they can tell you what is wrong and whether its nothing or something you need antibiotics or some other medication. gl.
