Question for christians

Even when we believe the scriptures are "without error" it's a risk to think our own understanding is without error.

What are your thoughts on this.

  • That's why God gave us His Holy Spirit who will teach us all Truth if we but ask Him too. Our understanding is finite, but His is infinite, and we are told that if we have need of anything, all we must do is ask of Him and He will give us what we need. That includes understanding. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of understanding, so it is a learning process by which we rely on Him for more and more understanding and less and less on our own.

  • i agree w/ that statement. and i think one could go one further to say that some ppl think they have the Holy Spirit to interpret the scriptures, when they really dont.

  • Agreed.
But we don't think the Bible is the "only" Authority. We believe in Holy Tradition and the Church, as well. Kind of a "trinity" of sorts.
All three - Scripture, Holy Tradition, and Church doctrine - must line up together. One cannot be in conflict with any of the others, in order to be valid.
