I want to adopt...Where do you start?

I had my tubes tied 10 years ago after my 2 child because I felt we could not afford to have any more. Well, here 10 year later there is plenty to go around. I mean no swimming or anything-just good to go. Anyway I want another child but I don't want a baby. I want a child so my kids will not be 11 years apart! I am 38. My DH is 39. WE want to adopt a child who is between 5 and 8 years old. We are not interested in Fostering. It would be to heart breaking for us to have them in our home and give them up... I just don't know where to start.

  • I think it is the duty of all PAPs to make sure that they are placing a demand for an ethical adoption whenever someone desires to adopt. It's a big responsibility :-) I think it's great that you're thinking of adopting an older child. I have found ethica to be a great resource: .

There are very few private adoption agencies that I have anything nice to say about. I do agree with another poster's advice to contact the county.

  • do you want to adopt from america or a foreign country? id research on the internet. check out russian adoptions too. they are faster.. not a ton of money and you are saving a child from a terrible orphanage.

  • It depends on what child you are looking for: If you are looking for a non-foster caucasian child without mental or physical handicaps, you will have a difficult time. Those children are rarely in adoption agencies. There are some that age in foster care legally free for adoption but it is not common, especially if you hope the child does not have some scars from a prior life.

Everyone thinks that only infants are in demand, that is not true. Infants are the most common placements but plenty of peopel would love to skip the baby years and have a little older child but they are not out there.

Google "Waiting Available Children" plus your state and you can see who currently is waiting.

  • OP:: I am actually okay with some amount of special needs. Our son (13) Was diagnosed as PDD-NOS and ODD at age 5. We have been there done that with the behavior problems and therapy trips!

  • If you are wanting a 5-8 year old that shouldn't be a real biggie. Talk to your county agency and they'll get you started. There are plenty of children in this age right here in the USA for adoption that want a home. Have you considered the possibility of a sibling group? There are many that want to stay together in this age. Here's a few links for children for adoption. You can also goggle your state and say: Ohio adoption photo listing and most states will pop up.
