unemployment question

My husband was laid off 2 weeks ago. He filed for unemployment and called in for his first check yesterday. Well the automated people on the phone told him nothing, and we are new at this whole thing. It just said it was being processed. Would he be getting a check this week or next?? And do they mail them to you or do we have to go and pick it up? Hes going to call in the morning, but I'm one of those people who will be up worrying all night because this will be our first week with no check if he doesn't get it tomorrow. Thanks.

  • Sometimes it does take a few weeks to get the first check but when they do process it, the check should be sent to your house.

  • In NC, they send you a visa debit card that gets loaded with the amount of your unemployment benefits every week. If you are in a state that still sends checks, you will have a check mailed to you.

  • in mo they have a mastercard that is sent to your house, if you don't put in your waiting week you have to wait another week before you get to apply for a new week before you get paid. they also have direct deposit. so you wait 18-22 days BEFORE you get your unemployment in the best case scenario.

  • He should get his first check within a week or so.

  • If he was laid off 2 weeks ago, he should have filed the first business day he was off. There is always at least 1 waiting week. In Ohio, the unemployment is deposited into your checking account automatically (you have to provide account information). Just be aware also that the actual check will be only 30% - 40 % of what his actual income was.

  • My SO got laid off in May when his job closed down!! He applied for unemployment & it took 3 weeks, he got sent a MC/Debit for his unemployment benefits and the money is put on there weekly. Like RutterMama said, it is only a small percentage of what he actually made - but it is better than nothing until it can be resolved. Have him call and discuss it further tomorrow, but please don't stress (I know how hard it is not too, we received his unemployment with only 2 weeks before our twins were born!!) it takes some time.

  • op - he did apply the day after he was laid off. he called this week to request his first check. of course i didn't sleep last night though :). we will call today and find out, thanks everyone though. at least i know it will get mailed to us, that helps a lot. and he got a nice severance package, so we will make it through the holidays nicely at least.
