first time mom and i dont understand the terminology... Can You help me please?

I went to the Hospital last night for bleeding. The nurse checked me and said it was my cervix dilating... She said I was 2 1/2 centimeters dilated, 70% effaced and a -2... What does all of that mean?

  • your cervix is thinning out, you're starting to dilate, you need to be 10cm dilated to give birth, so it looks like your little addition will be here any day.

  • That mean you are widening out down there to have your baby.

  • I believe +5 is crowning, lol. "Your baby probably will be at 0 station at the beginning of labor if this is your first pregnancy."

  • You need to get to 10cm diated, 100% effaced and +2 (? I think)
Dialated is how "open" your cervix is
Effaced is how "thick" you cervix is
Sation is the -2/+2 - its how far down the baby is into the birth canal.

You have started dialating, your crvix is thin (and pretty soft by now) but the baby hasn't decended into the birth canal yet. I was at about your point for at least week before delivery, but you could deliver any day. The closer you get to all three before active labor hits, the more likely you will have a shorter labor =)
