Would you be more inclined to hire Joe or José to do painting in your home?

Honest answers please! Answer anonymously if you choose. I am really trying to get advice for my husband. His name is José but he hasn't been getting as much business as his other painter colleagues and I believe it could be his ethnic name. I think if he introduced himself as Joe, he might get more business, as sad as that it is. He is a US citizen and was born here, FYI.

  • I don't go by name I go by price and reviews. Mainly price.

  • I'm not about names. I'm about money. I look for a deal. I also check references to see what others thought of his work. If you think about it, the stereotype about Mexicans is that they are great workers so his name might be a benefit!

  • Hispanic names are preferred in our area. Great reputations seem to be linked to those kinds of names. Does he advertise? I hate flyers on my door, but I do pick up business cards when I see them. Maybe your library will let him put some out, or tack some up at used book stores, cafes, anywhere that has a bulletin board available to the public. How about a posting on craigslist? Maybe under "barter". I place my hubby's carpet cleaning services like that, and I include a number for free quotes. He can even offer a "holiday discount".

Agreed, because if the Hispanic name mattered.....with all four of my own names I would be in a world of hurt. : )
