Whad does a 40 year old man want for Christmas?

Sadly, I know almost nothing about my brother Doug. He's 21 years older than me and we have different moms. We never hang out or really talk all that much except on facebook sometimes. I know he likes reading and is a movie and music buff. I hate to get him a gift certificate a second year in a row, but I don't think I have any other option.

  • You know, much as I hate giving gift certificates myself, it still beats getting him something he won't ever use, know what I mean? And strangely enough, I don't mind getting them at all, just giving them, heh. So unless you know a specific book, movie or CD he'd like, you're probably best off with a gift certificate...

  • From what you've said.. Borders gift card. I don't know why people think gift cards are insensitive or thoughtless. I hate buying gifts for people that I don't know whether they'll like them. My sister does this too me all the time and THAT is irritating. Get him the gift card . Write a note saying. something like I know how you love to read and you love music I just know you'll find sopmething you'll love at Borders (or wherever)

  • What about a watch? a beard trimmer? a wallet? some kind of tools? a magazine subscription? you could always buy a gift and get the gift receipt with it so he can return it if he doesn't like it.

  • Yeah, I've never had a problem with giving them. Like you said, I'd rather him get something he likes instead of something he'd hate from me. At least with a gift certificate froma book store he'll think "Oh she knows what stores I like."

I actually almost prefer gift certificates since I'm so picky about what I like.

  • Giving the gift receipt is like saying "I didn't put thought into this and now youcan go through the hassel of returning it."

  • UGH!!!! Look you don't have to be rude about it Sara, I was just trying to give you a suggestion, you are like just impossbile, I disagree giving the gift receipt is just in case, it doesn't fit, you already have one, you don't like it, etc!

  • Btw I think giving a gift card says, I didn't put any thought into this gift so go get one yourself!
