Anybodys DH a car mechanic???

I have a 2000 oldsmobile alero and the serpentine belt keeps shreading. My DH has replaced the belt 3 x's and it contuines to shread. Hes replaced the tensioner and the belt still shreads. Hes running out of ideas of what it can possibly be and we currently cant afford to take it to a mechanic. Does anybodys DH have any idea what else it could possibly be?? I know this is a odd question. Thanks for looking and any and all help.

  • My DH is a mechanic, but he's at work right now. I'm going to comment on your post so it will be easier to find and when he gets home, I'll show him this and see what he says.

  • Call a dealership; a mechanic there might have an idea for you.

  • It sounds to me like one of the pulleys that the belt runs on's surfaces is no longer smooth, or one of the grooved pulleys aren't spinning in a balanced manor so it wobbles.

  • hopefully this has something that will help start about the 6th paragraph, it tells about issues with the belt/.

  • I had a car shred belts. What had happened was that when I had it fixed once, the garage didn't check the alignment on the pulleys. It got progressively worse and worse. Eventually the belt mess spread like cancer and ruined the car.

  • Thanks ladies for all your responses. My DH finally figured it out! Its the crankcase pulley. Hopefully after fixing that my lil ole car will be good to go. Hopefully! It was beginning to drive us so crazy we were ready to put it on craigslist.
